About Serene Blue
Why I became a hypnotherapist
I’m Karen, a registered hypnotherapist. I founded SereneBlue after experiencing anxiety myself, so I know how challenging it can be – both to experience and for others to understand.
After discovering hypnotherapy and how beneficial it could be, I completed my professional training, and now specialise in anxiety, having Hypnotherapy for Anxiety and Panic (CHAP) certification.
If you have any questions about SereneBlue or what to expect from hypnotherapy, please get in touch.
I also offer a 15 minute free consultation so you can find out if hypnotherapy is right for you without any commitment.
Who can benefit from hypnotherapy for anxiety?
Although there are different and cross over forms of anxiety, there are three most common types: social anxiety; panic attacks and panic disorder; and general anxiety.
Social anxiety
Social anxiety involves an intense fear of being judged or scrutinised in social situations. Even everyday interactions—like meeting new people or speaking up in a group—can feel overwhelming.
People often avoid social gatherings or feel trapped in a cycle of constant worry: “What if I say the wrong thing?” or “What if everyone notices I’m nervous?” You might experience blushing, sweating, or racing thoughts.
General anxiety
General Anxiety, sometimes called Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), is characterised by persistent worry about a variety of aspects in life—work, health, finances, relationships, and more.
Rather than intense fear in specific moments, it feels like constant mental or physical tension. Some people describe it as a sense of dread that makes it difficult to relax or enjoy daily life.
Panic disorder & attacks
Panic disorder is marked by sudden, intense surges of fear—often called panic attacks. These can come on quickly, sometimes without an obvious trigger, and may feel life-threatening even when no real danger is present.
During a panic attack, you might experience a racing heart, breathlessness, tingling in the limbs, or a sense of impending doom. Because attacks can happen unexpectedly, the fear of the next one can create an ongoing sense of anxiety.
What are the symptoms of anxiety?
Anxiety symptoms can vary significantly from person to person. They can be mild or intense, and may ebb and flow depending on your general circumstances and stress levels.
It’s important to know that anxiety symptoms aren’t always constant. They can fluctuate, sometimes appearing suddenly (like in panic attacks) or build up gradually over days or weeks. You might go through periods of relative calm before experiencing a surge in anxiety again, especially during stressful events or life changes.
These are some of the symptoms you might experience if you have anxiety:
Avoidance
Overwhelming Worry
Physical Discomfort
Sleep Disruptions
Cognitive Fog
Digestive Issues
Irritability
Fear of Losing Control
Low Self-Confidence

Why choose hypnotherapy to treat anxiety?
Hypnotherapy gently guides you into a focused, relaxed state, allowing you to address the underlying triggers that cause repeat anxiety. But it goes beyond simply ‘relaxing’ you.
Because many anxiety responses stem from deeply ingrained beliefs, hypnotherapy works at the subconscious level to help you reframe these unhelpful thought patterns and learn healthier responses for use in future.
By gently accessing the deeper part of your mind, hypnotherapy aims to make any benefits you experience deep and longer lasting.
Treatment is collaborative which means you are always in control of your treatment and how you would like it to progress.
Hypnotherapy is completely natural and drug free. You may find it useful as part of a holistic treatment programme that includes Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or other wellness strategies.
Please always consult with a medical professional if you believe you have severe or clinical anxiety.

how it works
Free 15 Minute Consultation
I start every new client relationship with a brief, no-cost phone call to see if hypnotherapy is right for you—and if I’m the right therapist to help. During this call, we’ll talk about what you’d like to achieve and answer any initial questions you may have.

Self-Hypnosis and Ongoing Strategies
To extend the benefits of our sessions, you’ll learn simple relaxation and self-hypnosis exercises to use at home. These tools empower you to calm your mind whenever stressful situations arise, helping you maintain steady progress in between appointments.
Most people begin to notice positive changes after just a few sessions. We’ll work together at a pace that feels comfortable for you, ensuring every step feels supportive, safe, and useful.
Hypnotherapy for anxiety - terms and acronyms
Hypnotherapy techniques can sound confusing, so here’s a quick guide to some of them.
CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
CBT is a talking therapy that helps you recognize and change unhelpful thought patterns. It focuses on how your thoughts, feelings, and actions are connected and helps you develop healthier ways to respond to challenges.
It focuses on current problems rather than dealing with past experiences. CBT breaks down big problems into smaller, manageable parts, making them easier to deal with.
NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming)
NLP is a method that looks at how your brain processes information and how your words and behaviors shape your experiences. It helps you change habits, emotions, and thoughts to achieve your goals.
An example of NLP is ‘anchoring’; associating a specific stimulus, like pinching your thumb and forefinger, with a desired emotional state.
Self hypnosis
Learning to guide yourself into a relaxed, focused state without a hypnotherapist present. It can help you reinforce calm and positive thought patterns.
Trance (Hypnotic Trance)
A natural state of focused awareness where you remain in control, yet your mind is more open to positive suggestions and insights.
FAQs - Hypnotherapy for Anxiety
Can hypnotherapy help with mild anxiety and stress?
Yes. Hypnotherapy is especially useful for mild or general anxiety by promoting relaxation, reframing unhelpful thought patterns, and teaching practical coping strategies for day-to-day stress.
What if I’m not sure what triggers my anxiety?
Hypnotherapy can still be beneficial. By working with your subconscious mind, it often helps uncover and address hidden or subtle triggers, even if you’re not consciously aware of them.
Will I have to talk about my past or trauma?
Not necessarily. Many approaches to hypnotherapy focus on current goals and future well-being, rather than digging deep into past experiences. Your therapist will tailor the sessions to your comfort and needs.
How soon will I feel relief?
Some people notice a sense of calm and relief after the first session, while others experience gradual improvements over a few appointments. Progress depends on factors like individual response and the frequency of sessions.
What if I have more severe anxiety?
If you feel you have severe or clinical anxiety, you should always seek professional medical help before considering hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy may be a beneficial part of your treatment plan if advised by your healthcare professional.
Do I need a formal diagnosis of anxiety to benefit from hypnotherapy?
No. Even if you haven’t received an official diagnosis, hypnotherapy can help with mild or general anxious feelings that impact daily life.
Is there any risk of making my anxiety worse?
Hypnotherapy is designed to be a supportive, gentle process. If you ever feel uncomfortable, you can pause or stop the session. The goal is to alleviate, not exacerbate, anxious feelings.
Can children or teenagers with mild anxiety use hypnotherapy?
Yes, in many cases. However, for clients under 16, consent from a responsible adult, usually a parent or guardian, is always necessary, and they must remain in the room during therapy.
Will my anxiety be ‘cured,’ or is this a long-term management tool?
Each person’s response varies. Some experience significant relief, while others use hypnotherapy as one component of ongoing anxiety management. It’s best viewed as a collaborative process aimed at fostering positive change rather than a guaranteed “quick fix”.
What if my anxiety is tied to specific events or environments (e.g., driving, social gatherings)?
Hypnotherapy can be tailored to specific triggers. It’s something we can explore during your session or initial consultation. By focusing on those environments or situations in a relaxed state, you can gradually reframe your response and build confidence over time.
Do I still need other forms of support (like counseling or medication)?
Hypnotherapy can complement other treatments. If your anxiety is more severe or part of a broader mental health condition, professional medical advice is recommended to determine whether additional care or medication is advisable.
Can I drive or go back to work immediately after a session?
Yes. You may feel especially relaxed, but you’ll be perfectly able to continue with everyday tasks. It’s similar to feeling refreshed after a short rest.
Is hypnotherapy suitable for everyone?
Hypnotherapy can benefit most people dealing with mild or general issues (like stress, habits, or anxiety). However, those with certain medical or severe mental health conditions, such as chronic depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia, should consult a healthcare professional before starting hypnotherapy.
What is the science behind hypnosis?
Hypnosis involves an altered state of consciousness characterized by heightened suggestibility and focused attention. It’s important to consult with a healthcare provider to explore appropriate treatment options.
